The Future of American Prosperity
-
What will propel our national economy and what, if anything,
can we do to improve the outlook?
-
Will there be a return to the days of significant increases
in consumer spending, stock values and home prices?
-
How do policies that promise to control the business cycle
end up making things worse?
-
What can we do to return to acceptable levels of economic
growth, stability and prosperity?
What is Happening to Our Economy?
As
we approach a watershed election, The United States is also at a critical
economic juncture. For roughly the last half century, the American economy has
been dominated by the rise and the fall of double-digit inflation.
The rise of inflation (from less than 2 percent in 1960 to nearly 14 percent in
1980) was hugely disruptive, causing recessions and savaging confidence. The
fall of inflation (to less than 2 percent in 2001) was a huge engine of economic
growth.
Falling inflation led to falling interest rates, which in turn led to much
higher stock values and home prices, though these huge increases ultimately
ended in speculative “bubbles.”
Skepticism in the face of seductive appeals of collective uplift is not always
pessimism or conservatism. Sometimes, it is just prudent realism.
Just what the next great economic cycle will bring is an open question.
