Economics of Disasters
This class examines
a variety of disasters—from the Great Chicago Fire to the Asian Tsunami and
Hurricane Katrina. How can the lens of economics give students new insights into
how people behave during and after these events? When disasters strike what can
markets do to relieve human suffering? These events are “teachable moments” that
reveal an understanding of basic economics concepts such as scarcity,
incentives, moral hazard, and unintended consequences.
