Here’s How the
Stock Market Game™
Works

Step 1 - Virtual Cash
Students start with a virtual $100,000 cash account. Teachers use our curriculum to teach about long-term savings and investing.

Step 2 - Team Research
Working in teams, students research and evaluate companies and decide how they want to invest their cash together, based on what they have learned.

Step 3 - Academic Enrichment
Students follow the news and learn how current events can shape the economy. Plus they learn math as they calculate how changes in their stock prices affect their portfolio’s value.

Step 4 - Portfolio Management
Students purchase and sell stocks online as they follow the market and develop an understanding of what makes companies succeed, and how economic and political events can impact a company’s stock. Students compete for awards and all students receive a certificate of participation.

Step 5 - InvestWrite
Our national essay contest, InvestWrite, is an excellent culminating activity. Essay questions focus students on the importance of long-term saving and investing and strengthen their language skills. You don’t have to teach language arts to participate and there are great prizes available for both teachers and students. Learn more at www.investwrite.info.

What students gain from The Stock Market Game™ (SMG) program is a remarkable and memorable experience — an understanding of how their classroom lessons apply to the real world, and lifelong learning skills.

Who?
The Stock Market Game™ is appropriate for Grades 4-12.

What?
Comprehensive standards-based educational program based on a real-life simulation of the stock market.

Why?
The Stock Market Game™ teaches about the U.S. economic system while conveying and reinforcing basic concepts in economics, math, business, language arts, social studies, personal finance literacy, and more. In fact, the SMG curriculum is correlated to Colorado Academic Standards in 4 core academic areas for grades 4-12 including Economics, English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Social Studies. Beginning in 2011, SMG lessons will be aligned to the updated Colorado Academic Standards including the related 21st Century Skills and Readiness Competencies and the new Personal Financial Literacy Standards.

SMG Team Cost
$10 per team (3-5 students) with a 3 team minimum per teacher, plus you can sign up for a FREE teacher’s team.

InvestWrite Essay Contest
Students who participate in SMG may also enter InvestWrite, a national writing competition that is an extension of SMG. Students are provided a topic and an investment scenario, which requires them to assess, research, and then formulate possible solutions based on their findings, logic, and ideas. InvestWrite essays are reviewed by a national panel of judges.

Awards
Participants in the Fall and Early Spring SMG are eligible for regional and state level awards for The Stock Market Game™. In addition, InvestWrite entries are eligible for state and national awards. Award winning students and teachers are recognized at the annual Stock Market Game award ceremony in May.

We provide everything you need to teach your students the Stock Market Game! Valuable online teacher and student materials include research tools, lesson plans, curriculum, online teacher training, online newspaper subscriptions and up-to-date SMG Program news!

This rigorous study found that The Stock Market Game program significantly improved student performance in mathematics and increased financial literacy.
