Campaign 2008:
Economic Issues for the Classroom
 What
is the overriding theme of this national election? To quote the catch-phrase
from 1994, “It’s the economy, stupid.” The challenge is how to educate
tomorrow’s voters about complex economic issues. Students (as future voters)
need to be given the “lens of economics” to accurately evaluate these
critical election issues. June 19 will focus on the problems facing the
nation surrounding health care and immigration. These are ethical as well as
economic questions that have no easy solutions. June 20 will focus on tax
reform and the looming government fiscal crisis arising out of the many
entitlement programs. course is a foundation class for secondary teachers
interested in improving their knowledge and skills in teaching economics.
Teachers learn how to apply economic concepts in an integrated curriculum
with literacy, math, and social studies. All lesson plans are correlated to
the Colorado Model Content Standards in Economics. The class is ideal for
teachers who are looking for exciting new classroom ideas to stimulate
student learning.
